You might not want to purchase a ready made underground rainwater harvester, but might want to design your own rainwater harvesting system.
There are 4 main components
The first thing to consider is what you want to use the rainwater for. If it is for a whole house system, then do not consider anything smaller than a 3500 litre tank. If it is for garden use only, then a 1500 litre tank should be the minimum size for a useful system.
The next thing to consider is whether the rainwater harvester should be above or below ground
The advantages of an above ground rainwater harvester tank are these:-
The disadvantages of an above ground rainwater harvester are these:-
Above ground tanks are available up to 10,000 litres
Tanks under 1000 litres are of very limited value as far as rainwater storage is concerned. Unless your garden is very small, they should not be considered and they certainly could not provide any house supply.
Under UK Building Regulations, rainwater is not potable: domestic use should be limited to flushing the toilets and washing clothes.
Once you have decided the above, the next thing is to decide whether you want a simple pump and control system or a more sophisticated one
There are 2 pump systems available
The BASIC package has a pump inside the tank or in the house which tops up the water in the tank when the level drops below a certain limit.
The ADVANCED package which has the pump and control package - the SUPER RAIN UNIT - within the house, usually in the utility room. This pump control box has a digital display, showing at all times how much water is in the tank. You can set the pump to switch from rainwater to mains at any level of water in the tank
The next step is to decide which filtering system you want. These range from BASIC downpipe filters (only suitable for garden systems) to a sophisticated self-cleaning in-tank ADVANCED filtration system
A rain overflow syphon is also required. This fits on the overflow from the tank and skims pollens and small floating solids from the surface of the rainwater in the tank. This helps prevent the water turning brackish
Optional items include :-
First Flush bypass - this seperates out the first water to run off the roof for discharge into the drains. The first rain to wash over the roof contains 95% of the dust, bird droppings etc and some poeple opt for taking this out of the system.
Keep-Fresh Floats - these prevent the growth of bacteria and keep the water fresh and odour-free.
We can put together any system you choose to your own design and requirements.
